Specifying Stone Installations
Using Tile Methods and Standards
Discover how to use guidelines from the TCNA
Handbook for Ceramic Tile Installation and ANSI standards to specify stone
installations. Learn to avoid the key causes of installation system
failures.

The participants will learn how natural stones are formed, their
geological classifications, and how this information is used in
selecting an appropriate product for its’ intended use. They
will also learn how different types of quarrying and processing
techniques are used for removing rough product from the earth and
preparing it for shipment as blocks, slabs or tiles. This includes
finishes applied to the stone for visual and technical enhancement,
as well as to create aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the participants
will learn how testing data is used for determining the appropriate
use of natural stone products, which reference standards are used
in the stone industry, as well as the technical and design resources
available to the design professional.
- Understand the beauty and uniqueness of each type of
natural stone and how these characteristics can influence their
use.
- Learn how natural stones are created, quarried and processed
for use in a project.
- Develop an understanding of critical test data to insure that
the proper stone is used for your application.
- Find out about design and technical resources available.

New Technology for Today's
Hard Surface Flooring
Assemblies
In today's ever changing world, the challenges that
stone and tile installations present are constantly increasing in
both residential and commercial environments. The high cost of energy
is propelling our society to look for more efficient means of heating
buildings (e.g., radiant heat), and response to the demands of the
baby boomer population has created a boon in sound control (attenuation)
technology. In addition, the ability to produce larger formats (e.g.,
24" x 24" and 48" x 48" dimension stone and tile) has created unique
challenges in substrate preparation. To address these challenges,
this seminar will include such topics as: modular screeds; sound
control; movement joint placement, and uncoupling membranes.

Know Your Stone, Know Its Care
Know Your Stone, Know Its Care (KYSKIC) is a 1 hour class designed
to help students understand the different characteristics and categories
of stone to help them select the right stone to minimize potential
problems. Students will leave this class with an understanding of
how to prescribe proper care for stone and learn how to fix common
problems with stone. This class is registered with the AIA/CES for
continuing professional education.
